CANOE BUILDER,RESTORER
Found a nice canoe while cleaning out a barn in Machias,Me.Owner said take it or put it in the burn pile.Serial #107598 17'.Only needs canvas and a few ribs.Is it worth fixing or do i start the burn pile.

Might be a keeper

I have also come across a 17' Old Town. by looking on the net, spotted a site for a 1929 Old Town canoe being restored. This really inspired me to put some work into mine. It's in pretty good condition, a little TLC and it's going to be a great canoe.

Also check out the price of a new wood/canvas and also how much a restored can resale for.

worth the effort

Worth the fixing. They tend to get in your blood. They also tend to get blood on you sometimes if you're not careful. But well worth the effort. Whatever you do, find a way to save it. Don't cut it up or throw it out. They are infinitely repairable. And there is surely someone near you willing to help. Or, if you are so inclined you could get a couple bucks for it.
Regards, Dave.

Knowing a bit about a canoe adds to its value... having a build record for an Old Town adds a lot of interest. Here's some history to go along with Old Town 107598--

Old Town 107598 is a 17 foot CS grade ("common sense") Otca model canoe built between October 1930 and November 1931. It has red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, and ash decks, ash seat frames, and ash thwarts. It was fitted with a keel and painted dark green, then shipped to C.E. Stevens of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire on June 17, 1932.

The scan for this record is attached below. Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details.

If this record doesn't seem to fit your boat, we can try again! Sounds like a nice canoe... well worth time and effort making it usable again!
