Old Town issued serial number 500,000 in 1995 and their millionth serial number was issued in 2003 so their serial numbers in the 700,000 range would probably date from around 1999 to 2000. I don't believe that they were building any sponson canoes at that point but this was well after they stopped keeping records on paper so I can't be sure. My guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 168666. This is an 16 foot long Otca model with half ribs and sponsons. It was built between March, 1959 and May, 1960. The original exterior paint color was light blue. It shipped in May 24th, 1960 to Ann Arbor, Michigan. There was a previous request for a copy of this build record in May of 1972 from Ann Arbor, Michigan as shown on the back side of this record. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

The boat has hung in the garage since the 70's so you must be right on the 1st number, I joined a few minutes ago and thank you for the interesting information. Snce we haven't used the canoe in such a long time we were thinking about selling it can you tell me a price range or refer me to an appraiser in the area? I'm near Pontiac,Mi.

The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 should help you value this canoe. One of the restorers listed at http://www.wcha.org/buildsupply/ may be able to help if you are looking for a paid appraisal. A local chapter listed at http://www.wcha.org/local-area-chapters/ may also be able to help. The fastest way to find a good new home for a canoe like this is often with an listing at http://wcha.org/pp-classifieds/showcat.php?cat=3 which is free to you as a member. Good luck,

Benson
