Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hello All,

I am looking for a strip canoe that my wife and I can use for fishing and general recreation. We are both 6'2" - total weight 400 lbs-ish. In the wood/canvas realm I saw recommendations for the Chestnut Olgivy - are there any likewise-regarded options in the strip realm? I would like to buy, not make. Cartopping capability would be nice.

Thanks

John

A 17, even 18 foot Ogilvy sounds like it would be ideal for people of your size and with your interests. It’s a very flat bottomed, hence, stable canoe, developed for New Brunswick guides to take their clients salmon fishing. Standing up in one is not a problem. It is also heavy (due to double ribs) and not the quickest or most agile canoe.

That said, I don’t know anyone building a stripper version of the Ogilvy. It’s kind of idiosyncratic canoe, not much in demand because not as versatile as other hull shapes. But its a a good model for what you're looking for.
