I have an Old Town canoe bought second hand around 1980. It is 16'9" long. Serial # begins with XTC and ends with 76G. Suspect it is made of Royalex. Seats are
white molded plastic as is the single yoke.

Welcome and congratulations, the information at https://www.usps.org/national/safety/HIN/HIN.pdf indicates that you have an Old Town from February, 1976. You will need to provide the five digits between the XTC and the M or the six digit serial number to get a copy of the original build record. It is probably a Chipewyan Tripper model. The 1977 catalog page at https://forums.wcha.org/attachments/43621/ has more details about these canoes. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

the serial # stamped on the side is 211786. This stamp is very deep which suggests the hull is thick (~1/8") and made of Royalex. The riveted tag # XTC11786_76G. The space reflects a rip in the tag but it is likely the number 1 that's missing. The bow has the same logo as shown on the 1977 catalog you referenced. I measured it again and found it to be 17'2". So, I believe you correctly identified the model but with one reservation: my canoe is a mustard yellow which is not pictured in the catalog

The Old Town canoe with serial number 211786 is a 17 foot long Chipewyan Tripper model with aluminum inserts in the rails that weighed 73 pounds. It was built in January, 1976. The original exterior color was yellow. It shipped on February 20th, 1976 to Mount Kisco, New York. The back side indicates that there were some exterior vinyl skin breaks on the inside and the outside of the hull. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The missing character in your hull identification number is an M. The yellow exterior was not shown in the 1977 catalog but is listed near the bottom where the fine print says "Colors: Exterior: dark green, red, yellow." Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
