The brass tag reads, Manufactured By HE Crandell Lake Quinsigmond Worcester, Mass.

I found this interesting wooden item at a yard sale, and purchased it. Research shows it to a deck from a wooden canoe and being built as shown on the brass tag.

As the tag on the deck indicates, the canoe it was formerly associated with was built by H.E. Crandell in Worcester, Massachusetts. Crandell built canoes and ran a boat livery on Lake Quinsigamond. The factory and livery were actually started by J.R. Robertson in 1898. Robertson is perhaps one of the most significant figures in wood canoe history. In 1900, Howard Crandall takes over the business and in 1904 he marries Robertson's daughter.

Howard's son Clarence continued to run the business up to 1950, when it closed.

More can be found in Wooden Canoe issue 140 (April 2007).
