Adirondack Paddler
Hello,

I just purchased an Old Town Otca that's been in the family for over 55 years. It's been stored in a garage for over 30. It seems to be in good condition and has a unique paint job which I will try to post. It does have some modifications ... including the installation of snaps to attach a canvas spray skirt I guess, (I do not have the canvas). The canoe is painted in two shades of blue with white scottish terrier on the bow.

Please help my learn more about my special boat.

Thank you.

Kim

The Old Town canoe with serial number 120734 is a 16 foot long, AA grade, Otca model with Western red cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany trim, a keel and a floor rack. It was built between February and June, 1937. The original exterior paint color was a special order "blue to sample." It was shipped on June 23rd, 1937 to Rochester, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

These scans were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

The white Scottish terrier and canvas spray cover were probably added later since they are not mentioned on the build record. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
