I just acquired an Old Town sailing canoe with the following numbers 16818-17. I am in the process of restoring it. If you have any information I would greatly appreciate your input
Thanks Mike

Congratulations, but you probably don't have the Old Town canoe with serial number 16818 since this is 16 feet long. The Kennebec canoe with this serial number is also 16 feet long. My guess is that you have the Carleton canoe with serial number 16818 which is a 17 foot long, CS grade, Carleton model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, a keel, sponsons, a mast seat, a 45 square foot sail rig, and a set of leeboards. It was built between April, 1922 and February, 1924. The original exterior paint was dark green. It shipped on May 1st, 1925 to Stockbridge, Mass. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. A large number of Carleton catalogs are available at http://store.wcha.org/The-Historic-...pany-Catalog-Collection-Version-2-CD-ROM.html in the Historic Collection. Carleton usually placed a brass tag on the bow deck so you may find signs of some small nail holes left there. See http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?1906 for more information on this topic. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,

Benson

I have been going through the Carleton financial records recently and thought that the attached page might interest you. This shows the pricing and discount for your canoe's original order. It also confirms that the writing on the bottom of the build record indicates that it shipped with one hardwood and cane back rest. Carleton canoes were being manufactured in the same factory as Old Town at this time which explains the presence of the diamond headed bolts that you mentioned in your message to the webmaster. Please reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,

Benson
