Congratulations, but you probably don't have the Old Town canoe with serial number 16818 since this is 16 feet long. The Kennebec canoe with this serial number is also 16 feet long. My guess is that you have the Carleton canoe with serial number 16818 which is a 17 foot long, CS grade, Carleton model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, a keel, sponsons, a mast seat, a 45 square foot sail rig, and a set of leeboards. It was built between April, 1922 and February, 1924. The original exterior paint was dark green. It shipped on May 1st, 1925 to Stockbridge, Mass. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.
This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at
http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See
http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and
http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.
It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. A large number of Carleton catalogs are available at
http://store.wcha.org/The-Historic-...pany-Catalog-Collection-Version-2-CD-ROM.html in the Historic Collection. Carleton usually placed a brass tag on the bow deck so you may find signs of some small nail holes left there. See
http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?1906 for more information on this topic. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,
Benson
