I saved this beauty from a fire pit. I just found the number. Needed some very light scraping to reveal it. It’s 138416 16. The 3 could be an 8 but if I had to bet, I would go with the 3. It is currently for sale, but the more I look at it the more I am inclined to restore it myself. One guy looked at it and helped me find the numbers and establish that it is an Old Town. Will be most thankful for any help.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 138416 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense) grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales, number ten canvas, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between September and November, 1943. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on May 25th, 1944 to Providence, Rhode Island. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer this description doesn't match. The books at https://www.woodencanoe.org/books will help if you want to restore it yourself. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
