Hello.

Old Town 179871 is a 15' Lightweight model canoe that was completed January-February of 1968. It was fitted with a keel and painted dark green, then shipped to Colombia, South Carolina, on June 27, 1968. A telephone inquiry to Old Town was made May 4, 1998, from Timminsville, SC, and this is noted on the reverse of the record card. The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

If you are selling your canoe and plan to use this build record information as part of an ad, please consider giving the WCHA credit for this information on eBay or craigslist or wherever your canoe is listed. As you've probably noticed, we have a classifieds section on this website which permits uploading of several pictures and sticks around a bit longer than an eBay ad, all for the price of membership in this *great* organization.

There is a discussion of canoe value here: http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=57 and for the purposes of eBay selling, there is a guide here: http://reviews.ebay.com/Canoes-Antique-Wood-Canvas-Selling-Guide_W0QQugidZ10000000007165036

I hope that helps-- any questions, please ask. Glad you've enjoyed the canoe and hope it finds a deserving home.

Kathy
