Curious about Wooden Canoes
I finally have found an old town canoe close to my home and would like any info I can get. It is a 1913 year with serial number 25953 (or 25952). 18 foot since I am a newbie I would appreciate any explanation of the code meaning also

My guess is that you have the Old Town with serial number 25953 since the one with 25952 is 16 feet long. This is an 18 foot long, GS (Guide's Special or low) grade, IF (Indian Fishing) or Guide's model canoe with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, and birch seats, spruce finish rails, and a keel. It was built between March and May, 1913. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May 15th, 1913 to Duluth, Minnesota. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the decision,

Benson

I must have number wrong. I was sent a photo of build sheet that I can't full make out. It was shipped 4/5/13 and has color listed as slate
