Curious about Wooden Canoes
One of my buddies had two days off last week and we figured we could take a short trip on Lake Minnewanka close to Banff, Alberta.
It's one of the biggest lakes in Alberta with about 20 km in length. It can be quite windy and we were on the lake for about an hour when the wind started to pick up and after a while we had about one foot waves, luckily we had a tail wind and managed to reach our chosen campsite without a spill.
The evening was one of the nicest we had this summer and to top it all we also had a full moon coming up over the mountains. Next morning we made our way back early to avoid the wind. We took our time and enjoyed the paddle and made it back before the wind picked up, but not long after we left the lake we had a real windstorm and we just were glad we weren't on the lake anymore.
Lake Minnewanka is a great lake to paddle and the trip could be extended to four or five days, to explore the whole lake. Because it is located within the Banff National Park, a backcountry permit is needed for camping.
