Looking for the year our Kennebec canoe was built. The serial number is stamped and hard to read. It looks like a 5-digit number, possible 12125. Any information about this canoe would be appreciated.

The Kennebec canoe with serial number 12125 as shown on pages 528 and 529 of volume two in the Kennebec ledgers. This was assigned to 17 foot long Kennebec Sponson Model. It was planked by Mansell on March 20th, 1917. The canvas covering was applied by Roy on March 21st, 1917. The first filler coat was also applied by Roy on March 22nd, 1917 and the second was done on April 12th, 1917. It was railed by Morissitte on June 14th, 1917. The sponsons were completed by Doucette on May 3rd, 1917. It shipped to Bucknam on June 18th, 1917. The original Kennebec records are stored at the Maine State Museum. I am unable to attach a scan of these records since their policies do not permit any electronic reproduction of their materials.

The microfilms of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

More information about these caones can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CD available from http://merchandise.wcha.org/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
