Dave Wermuth

Who hid my paddle?
Hi Benson, this is Jerry Van's Kbec I'm hoping you can shed some light on what he has. I'm just beginning the restoration. Here are my guesses in order of my highest guess on down, and a photo.
108410 17
103410 17
108110 17
103110 17
you get the idea.

103410 is a 17 Kineo Special
1937

I would have said it reads 193119 but the Kbec numbers don't go there...

I am confident that it isn't 108410 or 108110 since Kennebec doesn't appear to have issued serial numbers in that range. My guess is that you have either 103410 or 103110 since these are both green 17 foot long canoes.

The Kennebec with serial number 103410 is a 17 foot long Kineo Special model as shown on pages 288 and 289 of volume five in the Kennebec ledgers. It was planked by Roy on April 10th, 1937. The canvas covering was installed by Thib. on April 17th, 1937 and he applied the first filler coat on the same day. He put the second filler coat on during April 30th, 1937. The rails were installed by Vigue on May 14th, 1937. The "F 22" (Function number 22 or the keel?) and "F 24" (Function number 24 or the seats?) were completed by Thib. on May 22nd, 1937. It was painted green and shipped to location "37-174 on June 11th, 1937.

The Kennebec with serial number 103110 is a 17 foot long Kineo Special model as shown on pages 282 and 283 of volume five in the Kennebec ledgers. It was planked by Mansell on October 31st, 1931. The canvas covering was installed by Thibodeau on November 14th, 1931 and he applied the first filler coat on the same day. Mansell applied the second filler coat on February 12th, 1933. The rails were installed by Mansell on February 25th, 1933. The "F 22" (Function number 22 or the keel?) was installed by Mansell on March 4th, 1933. The "F 24" (Function number 24 or the seats?) and "F28" (Function number 28 or the painting?) were completed by Thib. on April 15th, 1933. It was painted green and shipped to location "33-79 on April 20th, 1933.

These location codes are probably order numbers but we don't currently have enough information to identify them. The scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. The original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) as you probably know well. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if these descriptions don't match the canoe. I'm sorry about the delay, it has been busy recently. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

Thanks MGC and thanks Benson. I figured you were tied up with something. Too bad the codes aren't known but it had to be one of those two. Jerry Van and i appreciate all the effort.

Yes, I certainly do appreciate it! I'm pretty certain I'm seeing 103410. I think if the 4 were really a 1, the spacing after the 3 would not be as wide as it is.

I find it interesting that #103110 was started in 1931 but only completed approx. 1.5 years later in 1933! I'm guessing the Depression caused some folks to wonder if a canoe purchase was really a prudent way to spend cash. I'm certain that a good used car could be had for the $65 the canoe might have cost.

Anyway, great resource! Thanks again!
