Kennebec Kineo

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I'm working on what I believe to be an early 17' Kineo. The serial # appears to be 16539. It's difficult to be certain of the last two digits, especially the 9. Can anyone help with an ID?

The Kennebec canoe with serial number 16539 is shown on page 193 of volume number three in the Kennebec ledgers. This was assigned to an 17 foot long Kennebec Model type a. It was planked by Lantigne(?) on August 19th, 1922. It was covered with canvas by Tuttle and the first filler coat was applied by Grant on the same day. The second filler coat was applied by Tuttle on September 30th, 1922. The rails were applied by Mansell on June 30th, 1923. The original color was red and it originally shipped to location "23-502" on June 30th, 1923. This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it. There is also a note on the same line indicating location 24-528 with a June 16th, 1924 date so it may have been returned and shipped out again the next year. The line below has a another comment "(2nd 28-1104 8/3/28)" so it may have been returned a second time and been shipped out a third time on August 3rd, 1928 or this may apply to the canoe with serial number 16540.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CDs available from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
