Kennebec 12838

Dave Wermuth

Who hid my paddle?
From Great Lakes Regional assembly. Could I get the scoop on this Kennebec?

I believe the tag says 12838. But 8's and 3's can be tricky, so here's a photo.

Well, Kennebec skipped number 12888 and 12883 was 17 feet long. Both 12838 and 12833 were 16 feet long while 12828 had a full length stem band. I agree with Paul that this one is probably 12833 but the records for both are shown below. Their number 12833 is a 16 foot long Kennebec model type a as shown on page 175 of volume two in the Kennebec ledgers. It was planked by F. Roy on May 17th, 1919. The canvas covering and first filler coat were applied by Roy on the same day. He applied the second filler coat on June 7th, 1919. It was railed by W. Thompson on June 14th, 1919. The original color was not specified. It shipped to H. G. Krogman in Saginaw, Michigan. on June, 16th, 1919.

The scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) as you probably know well. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Paul, fwiw----priceless. The canoe has been in Saginaw all along and is now soaking in my pond here in the Kingdom of Derelict Canoe Whispering.

Thank you Benson!!
