Our boat serial numbers are 173145 and are upside down on the transom. Is this normal? Would love to find info on this boat.
Is it called a runabout?

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town build record for serial number 173145 shows a 13.5 foot long Lapstrake 14 model boat with a deck, a floor rack, and a 20 inch transom. It was built between June and August, 1963. The original exterior color was red with a fire red bottom. It shipped to Port Washington, Long Island, New York on June 25th, 1964. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your boat. This is the only boat I've seen with the serial number in that location so it may not be normal. the page at https://www.dictionary.com/browse/runabout lists "a small pleasure motorboat" as a definition so this could apply to your boat. The catalog pages describing this boat from the 1964 catalog are also attached. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Benson
