Old Town Lapstrake 19

Hello!

A community organization I belong to is being given a 1964 Old Town Lapstrake 19 (runabout), in restorable condition and with complete original paperwork. (Hull ID is 19173879) The boat was at some point converted from “inboard” to outboard and a 1972 85 hp Evinrude Starflight and Shorelander roller trailer are included. The planking, ribs and other structural timbers are 98% solid, with only a few soft spots and one hole aft of amidship along the keel. We will be selling the boat to support our community center and I am trying to find some way to determine the boat’s value and where best to advertise it. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks in advance.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town build record for serial number 19 173879 shows a 19 foot long lapstrake 19 model boat with a keel and a floor rack. The transom was notched for an outboard motor at the factory as indicated by the note at the bottom. It was built in May, 1964. The original exterior color was white with a red enamel bottom from Woolsey. It shipped on May 28th, 1964 to Bangor, Maine. A scan of the build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your boat. A proper valuation will require a survey and someone from the Antique and Classic Boat Society at https://acbs.org/ may be able to help with that. You can advertise it here at https://www.woodencanoe.org/classifieds and the page at https://www.woodencanoe.org/ad-instructions explains the process. The pages from the 1964 catalog describing this boat are also attached below. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the sale,

Benson

Thank you, Benson, for the very comprehensive info. If you or anyone else has an idea where this boat would best be advertised or where we could get a valuation, I’d be most grateful.

When I want to price something, I check local listings, and Ebay sold listings. Some asking prices will be ridiculously high, ignore those. You're competing with the lowest priced similar item. Sometimes a charity auction will fetch more. Wooden boats, especially those needing work, can be very hard to sell. Good luck with yours.
