I want to save this canoe

Curious about Wooden Canoes

And I took these photos http://s56.photobucket.com/albums/g188/nameisunavailable/Canoe/
I have two sons that I had wanted to share my experience with canoes as my dad did with me. So here I am, looking through the craiglist ads for a canoe when I happened upon this wood canoe. Now I am all about old school and saw this as art, even though I wasn't looking for a wood canoe, I fell in love with them. I thought all I had to do was to replace the keel and canvas and off we go. Now several of you are smiling at the naivety of that last sentance, I'm certain of that. Been perusing the web trying to educate myself on wood canoes and I understand that this will be more of a herculean effort than a canvas, keel replacement.

There is at least one plank that is cracked along the side. The outwell will need replacing. As you may tell, the planks that the keel were near are rotted. The lady who owns the canoe, removed part of the rotted keel and exposed the hole in the photo. From what I have read about Richardson construction, the planks are tongue and groove, the canvass is glued. She said she is willing to work with me on the price, however, her asking price was $800. I do not want to insult her with what may appear to be a low ball offer. I was thinking around $200-$250. Am I'm off on that price? It is difficult for me know what the value is of this canoe and what to offer her.

The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 may help you value this canoe. It appears to look reasonably good from a distance so someone might be willing to pay $800 to hang it up as a decoration. However, some significant repairs will be necessary to make it float again so even the $200 offer you are considering may be high. Good luck,

Benson

I couldn't find any listed on eBay , active nor completed for the Richardson canoe. I didn't know what this model is worth and wether it brings more than an Old Town. I want to make a fair offer.

I should correct myself. My OT has some typical rot despite it's ability to float. So the Rishardson might be better in camparison than I first thought. Another comparison, last summer I got a 15' OT for $600.00. It was rebuilt well and in very nice shape.

Do Richardson canoes have any more collectability that I should consider in my offer? I thought about it and will offer her $250. It looks better in the photos than in person. Sorta like me.

Welcome to the world of canoe restoring. From what can be seen in the pictures, it looks like you've got something that will be very nice when it's done. Pictures please, as you go along, and certainly when it is finished.
