How do you sail a canoe?

Having never done this before, I was looking for any advice on the process of sailing a canoe. Seems like the canoe would tip very easily. Is there a way to right the canoe if it does tip? I have sailed small surfboard type of craft but this looks a bit more challenging.

Ken,

The online store has a fine book by Todd Bradshaw "Canoe Rig" which has a ton of information and just good stuff on setting up a canoe for sailing and technique.

Another option is a little pamphlet (you may have to search around for it) called "Sail Your Canoe, How to Add Sails to Your Canoe" by John Bull and published by CORDEE Press out of Great Btitain. ISBN #0 904405 94 X. Only 54 pages but gives good insite into John MacGregor in the Rob Roy and Nathaniel Bishop in the Maria Theresa.

Also, since you are local, Pymatuning Resevoir has a sailing club which hosts the American Canoe Sailing Regatta . A lot can be learned from just watching and talking with the folks there. Check here:

Also, try the ACA Sailing pages:

All the best,
