help with serial numbers serarch OT # 49387 16

Hello John,

This appears to be the correct record based on where the canoe was sent and the canoe's length, but be sure to check out other factors.

Old Town 49387 is a 16 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade Charles River model canoe (and I can't make out some small writing to the right of "CR"). It was completed May-September of 1917, so don't expect to find diamond-head bolts holding the thwarts and seat frames unless they were added at a later time. The canoe has red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks/thwarts/seat frames/ and a keel. Originally it was dark green (and I can't figure out the word to the right of that) (this fellow had nice handwriting, but a bit fancy for this sort of documentation). The canoe was shipped to San Francisco on March 6, 1918. Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy
