Help identifying

We acquired this canoe from the previous owner of our home. It’s been hanging in our barn for years. We don’t have any idea what it is other than finding markings for St. Louis boat and canoe company. We have no desire to use it, we are land people. Water sports are not for us. Any help identifying and or valuing this canoe is much appreciated!

The page at https://woodencanoemuseum.org/index.php/builder-history/st-louis-meramec-canoe-company has more details about the St. Louis Meramec Canoe Company which evolved into the St. Louis Boat and Motor Company. The page at https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/57/ should help you value it. A listing at https://www.woodencanoe.org/classifieds is usually the fastest way to find it a good new home. The process to create a listing is explained at https://www.woodencanoe.org/ad-instructions in more detail. Feel free to post here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the sale,

Benson

Thank you for the links. I have visited each and still don’t have a good idea of what the worth is. We have a guy interested but have no idea what kind of price to put on it. Would you be able to give me just a ballpark to start?

It is always difficult to value a canoe from pictures. This canoe is not from a well known builder which makes it more rare but less in demand. It appears to be in good shape so is probably worth something between $500 and $1500. A key distinction can be how badly it leaks, which is important if the buyer plans to use the canoe. This can be tough to test easily in the winter. You may be able to get some idea by turning it upside down, dumping a few buckets of warm water all over the outside, and then checking the inside for wet spots. If the buyer is simply looking for a display piece then the appearance will be more important than any leaks. A formal written appraisal can probably be provided by one of the restorers listed at https://www.woodencanoe.org/builders-suppliers or a chapter contact listed at https://www.woodencanoe.org/chapters for a small fee. Good luck,

Benson
