We always used the 4" screw-in Beckson plates with the little nylon liner bag on Hobie Cats. The bag kept stuff from wandering away and the ports got a pretty good dunk test from time to time and never failed to keep our wallets and other stuff dry. They aren't woody-looking, but I don't find them particularly unattractive.
