Filling inner ribs?

Second question: does anyone bother to fill the divots in the ribs on the inside? I removed the punky and broken planks by splitting them out. That left the clenched nails sticking out of the ribs, so I cut off the heads and punched them through to the inside with nail sets. Then I removed the nails from the inside with a pair of pliers. Leaving a divot. Do I fill the divots, or just leave them and fill with varnish?

I would leave it. I usually will pull the tack out which leaves a divot on the plank which doesn't matter as it gets thrown out. That way the rib isn't usually damaged too badly. Vice a versa for rib replacement, I sacrifice the rib and save the plank. You could use putty or mix your own, depends on your preference. I don't think there's a hard and fast rule on that.
