Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
I'm just getting into a new book, "Solitude: Seeking Wisdom in Extremes" by Robert Kul. This is based on his journals of a year in Tierra del Fuego, which was the "Solitude Project", the experiential part of his PhD thesis.

I am surprised how much "baggage" and high tech gear he took along. And a cat.

In the Canadian Geographic article he admits to being "neurotic"; http://www.bobkull.org/Canadian_Geographic_Article.pdf

Reminds me of the trip taken by a group of people, re-creating Eric Sevareid's adventure in "Canoeing with the Cree". These people took every modern technical piece of equipment imaginable... and their canoes certainly weren't wood/canvas.
