Expiry Date On Enamel Paint??

Today I was offered a half dozen or so gallons of good marine enamel paint for 75% off at a local paint store. The owner said it is old stock, "out of date" so he's clearing it out. It seems like it might be an excellent deal and as it's the base I can get it any color I want....told him to hold it for a day or so I'd get back to him.

What's up with that? I've never heard of paint having an expiry date or "best before". I did some googling but cannot find any info. Would any of you experienced guys be able to shed some light on this?

If it was stored properly (not frozen) and the cans were never opened I'd buy it. Oil-based paint and varnish are usually packed with an inert gas to displace the oxygen so there's little chance of it skimming over or hardening.

If you need something soon have him color one of the cans, shake it up, and look at it. Heck, at 75% off you could paint the LP tank with it and be ahead.
