Early Closed gunnel Carlton

Paul Miller

Canoe Nut
Hi,

I would like the build record for an old Carlton with closed gunnels that has a great name plate still on the deck and not too bad a shape. Serial number is 17-12842. Should be late teen's with sponsons.

I have attached a few pics,

Thanks,

Paul

The build record for the Carleton canoe with serial number 12842 shows a 17 foot long, CS grade, Carleton model with red Western Cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash trim, and sponsons. It was built in between January 1917 and February 1918. The original exterior paint color was B. (brilliant) green. It shipped on March 15th, 1918 to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

These scans were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
