Carlton closed gunnel

Paul Miller

Canoe Nut

I was hoping we might have some Carlton canoe records.

If so please try and find 8497-16.

Nice closed gunnel with a Carlton tag on the deck.

Hey Paul--

We sure do have Carleton records...

Carleton 8497 is a 16 foot Carleton model canoe completed between September of 1911 and February 1913. It has red Western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, maple decks, thwarts, and seats and a keel. It was originally (guess) dark green! The canoe was sent to Providence, RI, on February 28, 1913.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See to learn more about the WCHA and to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
