Red River Canoe & Paddle
This photo turned out so nice that I just had to share it with you. The one with the new canoe in front and the building form in back
I've been building these Cross Lake Racing canoes recently. In the background you can see the bent ribs for #4, and in the foreground you can see the recently completed #3. This is a bistroke event, the bow rows and the stern paddles. 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the event.
The green canoe is one that I built last year and it sparked the interest in this year's orders. You can see how the canoe is set up. These racing canoes are derived from 18' Chestnut freighter canoes which, over the years, have become highly modified by being pulled in 10" narrower, and the gunnels for the stern paddler even more in order to facilitate paddling. They are required to be wood/canvas, 18' long, and have the transom. The supply of older canoes is drying up and in order for the race to continue to have new participants, new canoes are needed.
Over the last few years I have built three. I have orders for five of them this year, the yellow canoe is number one, the maroon is number two, the blue is number three. I am starting number four and it will be orange.
