Hello, i am looking for some informations about a Chestnut Canoe. The Serial Nr. is 041006. But the number "1" looks strange. The Owner told me it is a Prospector from 1987. Thank you for help.

Can't be 1987 as the original company failed and closed to doors in 1978-79. No records were kept of the serial numbers that were used so no dates can be given using the serial number. The heavy square cut ribs are generally associated with the last years of the company's existence. The bow deck is similar to the later canoes. You stern deck looks very long and possibly was a replacement. The carved portage yoke is not common and may be an addition. Others may have more to say.

It is hard to make out, but it appears your decal has the Fredericton, NB, location, which would out the build date as 1974 or earlier.

It is also possible it was built later and someone put the older style decal on it. There were a number of builders building Prospectors after Chestnut closed, both on original molds and on clones.
