Wooden Canoeist
Looking for a Carleton with SN# 19040-16. It had sponsons and Carleton grab handles both bow and stern.

LAter- - and Thanks - Bud

The Carleton canoe with serial number 19040 is a 16 foot long, regular grade, Carleton model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, a keel, outside stems, and sponsons. The original exterior paint color was maroon with a half inch black stripe edged in gold. It shipped on March 4th, 1925 to Baltimore, Maryland. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

Hi Bud,
Could you post a picture of the grab handles if you get a chance? Specifically how they connect to the inwales. Thank you!
Dan

I'm not Bud, but here is a photo of the Carleton carry thwart. Just tucked up under the inner gunwale like a standard thwart.

Diamond head bolts were used after circa 1920.

Note that two were installed on sponson canoes, but only in the bow for standard canoes.

Thank you Benson and Dan for the pics and links. Looks like they are all tucked up under the inwale.
The inwales on the unknown canoe I have has cutouts for carry thwarts in the bow and stern. I think it would be considered a half mortise. There is enough of one carry thwart left to get the shape.
