Cant on Penn Yan

The first cant rib on both ends is not and never has been fastened to anything at the top. This doesn't seem right.
I replaced the tip of both decks and there is a slight brace on the bottom of the new deck piece. I don't know if the original deck tip provided a better brace for the ribs as it was rotted pretty good.
Should I screw in a block under the deck and properly fasten the cant ribs to it or is what am looking at now, proper?
