Canoe identification?

Blue Viking

Wooden Canoe Maniac
This should be an interesting question!!!!......I ran across and unfinished 16-17' Royalex canoe...either the back has been cut off or it was designed to be a square stern....It has the ID# XTCO6941B72 written in marker on the right side up under where a deck would mount..It has the rails (composite gunwales) is entirely unfinished and is claimed to be an OT reject...

Any help in trying to identify this number and make?
Thanks

My guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 206941 which is a 16 foot long Chipewyan model which was a reject due to bubbles on the outside stern. It was built in March, 1975. The original exterior color was red. It shipped on April 9th, 1975 to Monroe, New Hampshire.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join or renew.

The XTC... number is the hull identification number (HIN) that is required by the U. S. Coast Guard.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Benson, any recommendations as to where I can see a photo and the specifications of this model?....I am pretty sure we are talking about the same canoe but to could use some help with nailing down the postive identification statistics.

The Chipewyan model pages from the 1975 Old Town catalog are attached below. More information like this is can be found on the Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection CD-ROM which is available from http://woodencanoe.org/catalog/prod...d=404&osCsid=39f7e6f54228bc26faca437d11ded5cb and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/orderform.html on the web.

You may also want to check the serial number again since XTCO6941B72 indicates an Old Town canoe with serial number 206941 that was shipped in February, 1972. This does not match the April 9th, 1975 shipping date for that number as shown in the previous attachment. The hull should have a six digit serial number stamp on the bow from when it came out of the mold in addition to the XTC... tag that was placed on the starboard stern when it was shipped.
