Canoe history

I recently purchased what I believe is an old town canoe from about the 1915/16 year(s) I would like to know history if possible. I have what looks like a copy of the original receipt and I would like to know if it’s authentic. The numbers on the receipt match what’s stamped in the canoe. I also believe it is still all original paint. Any help confirming the history of this beautiful canoe would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Todd

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 42295 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, and a keel. It was built between March and May, 1916. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on May 19th, 1916 to Buffalo, New York. Another scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson

Tod, you had better hang onto this one. It's special, a temporal anomaly, a time-traveling canoe! Notice that it was built in the spring of 1916, then went back in time to 1915 to have its keel and rails added, then back to 1916 for paint and varnish... WOW! You could restore this one, then paddle back to last night and choose the other item that you really wanted from the menu. Maybe go forward in time to see some game scores and how some stocks are going to perform... paddle with ichthyosaurs... the world will be your oyster through all time!
