Francis Lee Jacques…illustrated many early canoe and wilderness related books.

I found this book among my late father in law's stuff. I think it was the illustrations that interested him, rather than the canoe. The book was published in 1938 by the University of Minnesota Press.

Francis illustrated and his wife Florence wrote the text. There are six canoe illustrations and many wildlife ones, here are the other five.

If you like his artistry, you would like one of his other books "Snowshoe Country" as well.
Also Sigurd Olson who wrote a number of great books on canoeing and the Boundary Waters Area had Francis illustrate some of his books as well, such as "The Singing Wilderness".

I scanned them from the book, printed a couple of them poster size and mounted on thick foam core. The one of the canoe in front of the cliffs, I think it was the north shore of Superior (maybe ?), has hung above our bed for 20 years. Wonderful illustrations.

Thanks Gary, seems a bit of a University of Minnesota Press speciality, unfortunately the collectors have got there already but I'll look further here in the UK.

It seems they took the train from New York to Winton, Minnesota, got a short lift with the canoe and started on a nearby lake.
