Canoe chairs/seats- anyone recognize?

Here is a pair of chairs/seats I picked up recently with a canoe. I wonder if anyone recognizes these. They may well be home-made, but they are well done other than the hardware (I haven't taken them apart to see if there is evidence of previous, better hardware). They are made of white oak, and they have no legs, but only a thin cleat on the bottom lateral edges. You can see that the caning is very fine.

Any thoughts? I wonder if anyone has seen anything like this before? If home-made, someone took their work seriously. They are significantly heavier than most identifiable ones we have or have seen, which also casts doubt on them being production seats.
