See http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?10322 for more information about serial number 153227. The Old Town canoe with serial number 15370 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, spruce outside finish rails, and a keel. It was built between November, 1910 and May, 1911. The original exterior paint was dark red. It shipped on June 3rd, 1911 to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

We just purchased the canoe from a friend of the original owner. They still work at the College it was shipped to, Do you have an idea of the cost, the Canoe would have sold for?
The story go's, the College wouldn't pay for the Canoe. Miss Iddens wanted to use it in the Pool to help teach her swimming class. She would have a student in the Canoe and flip it over so the student would have to swim to the side of the pool, and back to get the Canoe. Miss Iddens paid for the Canoe herself, and used it only for working with her students for many years.
The Wood's in nice shape, we will need to re-canvas, lt's still a Beautiful Canoe.

This canoe with sponsons was listed at $278 as shown in the 1954 catalog page below. The half ribs added $8. The crating charge was typically about $16 if requested and the shipping was probably less than $58. The information at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/guide/ has some more details about how the prices of wooden canoes have changed over time. This is a great story,
