Build records

LOVES Wooden Canoes
I remember reading a book on canoe history that referred to a method of keeping build records whereby the serial numbers, dates and canoe types were marked on planking strips hung in the canoe workshop. Does anyone remember what book this might have appeared in or have any other information on this method of documenting build activity?
This is the way most of the records were kept in the Grant Adirondack guideboat shop. See the Durants' book for more information.
