Barn find ID?

My friend has this in his barn and I thought it might be worth something. Ha. I know you guys hear that all the time! I took pics today and will help him sell it. I'm not sure we'll bother washing it clean. But in looking at it by my phone-light I could NOT see any ID of any kind. Still... Maybe there are tell-tale construction details? I noticed a crack and that looks like someone has sanded around. I detect faint weave marks under the sanded paint. So that would be the canvas, I suppose? Well, thanks for your thoughts!

If you don't at least wash it, you will likely be giving it away.
That said, even washed there is not a lot of money there, and now is a terrible time to be selling a canoe.
You might want to check out the section about canoe value while you decide what to do.

Jeff.........Value is one of the most perplexing issues when it involves a canoe, especially one with some special meaning to the owner. Try this to begin with and bear in mind it is value at the time you are wiling to let it go that is relevant to the question .

Find out all that you can about the canoe, and leave no stone unturned if you have some time.
Make a list of all the possible components relative to value and apply what is relevant to your boat. Objectivity only, for this.
Know why you are asking about the value. This is often a soul searching exercise so good luck.
If you determine a value, test it in the marketplace, nationally if possible, especially for an interesting boat.
How flexible will you be with an offer regarding cost , delivery, or any accessories available to the buyer.
How quickly do you want get this done. Are you wanting to place the boat or get it out of garage or the dining room.
You can massage this any which way, and the others speak the truth. It is a fixeruppa but a good cleaning with proper pics in a pleasant setting may well make the sale.
We would all like a beautiful model t use but I don't think one is possible.
Above all have fun.

The pricing information at the link below and the archive of other Thompsons that have been listed in the classifieds at https://wcha.org/classified-archive/Thompson.html may help. Good luck with the sale,

Benson

An addendum....location also matters somewhat. Here in New York, even with possible Cortland ties, a Thompson is not as desirable as it might be in Wisconsin. Good luck trying to sell me a Shell Lake. How many Mid-Westerners want Penn Yan?
Removing the dirt might help to sell it, but in that restoration requires an intensive cleaning, it does nothing to improve the value. (IMHO)

.Is this likely the case even cleaned up w good pics?
Yes. A first-time buyer with stars in his eyes might pay more ( I certainly did at first for specific canoes I wanted), but now with 12 of 'em in the barn I'm looking for free and up to $150 boats ... max. Well, that is until the next 'special' boat comes along...

I do, and have, at least an Owasco, I really wanted a Rainbow but it wasn't to be.
(It has such a pretty shape, lots of tumblehome.)

I started like this, but as the numbers increased I got fussier and only considered certain brands and/or models, and of course then the cost increased. The last boat is basically a 1 of 1 and I paid North of $3k and consider myself lucky to get it.

Of course there are exceptions.... when the sickness grips you, rational thought is no longer part of the buying process.
And, I do agree, the PY canoes are actually pretty good. I also fell victim to one (a Hunter) once upon a time...but never a Shell Lake.
I should add, I really love my Thompson cartopper. It's well made with great materials. I have yet to own one of the canoes....hmmm....
