There are days, and then there are DAYS. Yesterday was one of angst and rant; today is one of pleasure and sharing a great new discovery. Both mornings involved sample canoes. Yesterday's was yucky; today's is a positive delight. Recently discovered, it is only the fourth of its kind currently known to exist - a lovely old 7' 1" display sample by the Chestnut Canoe Co. of Fredericton, NB, likely made around 1910 (an old note attached to the model even suggests as early as 1901-05, although I believe that fails the logic test as well as pushes too far). This sample was found in an old shed in Northern Ontario, where it had lain undisturbed for many years. It likely went to that location to be displayed in a general hardware store, where the merchant was a supplier of all things needed for 'life in the bush', including the sale of many Chestnut 'Prospector' full-size canoes. Here are a few photos of this lovely old piece. Regrettably, the exterior has been somewhat sloppily repainted at some point, but the inside is absolutely delicious, and there is a great, old pre-fire decal on both its decks. The owner is not inclined to part with it, so it is not for sale at this time (although I did try). Just wanted to brighten the day for those who share a love for these things; hope you enjoy the pics.
