#93820 Old Town Canoe

Hello WCHA. I have an antique store in Charlotte and a fellow brought a really nice canoe in. I purchased the canoe having no idea the value. It's in decent shape. The serial number is 93820. Any idea of age and value?

It may not be the answer you're hoping to hear, but this thread:
http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57-How-much-is-my-old-wooden-canoe-worth
does a great job of answering your question.

If you post some pictures of it, there are folks here who can make some very educated guesses as to its maker. The serial number indicates it could be an Old Town, but pictures would help clarify that. Besides, we just like pictures of old canoes, paddles, and related stuff... :)

The Old Town canoe with serial number 93820 is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between February, and June 1927. The original exterior paint color was dark red. It was shipped on June 23rd, 1927 to Northville, New York. The back side of this card indicates that it may have moved to the Washington, D. C. area by August 24th, 1973 when there was a previous request for a copy of this build record. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match the canoe. The messages at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 have some good information about how to value and sell a canoe like this as Paul mentioned. The classifieds at http://classifieds.wcha.org/ are another good way to find a similar one for a price comparison. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
