Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
Please research the build record for # 82291 - 17. This is a 17 foot canoe with 16" decks, keel, and CLOSED gunwales. Not sure if it is Old Town or some other mfg. The numbers are stamped on the inside stem both ends as Old Town did them. No question the gunwales were always closed.
Thanks

Hello--

Old Town 82291 is a 17 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade HW (heavy water) model canoe that was finished December 1923-June 1925, with red Western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seat frames, and a keel. It was originally dark green. It was shipped to the Weirs, New Hampshire, on June 8, 1925. A copy of the scan is attached below-- click on it to make it larger.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
