Carleton SN 17 10139

I have taken in a 17' closed gunwale canoe that I think is a Carleton. It has the right decks and the curved carrying thwart just aft of the bow deck. The gunwales are closed with a spline between inwales and outwales rather than a cap, which I am not sure is original construction. Does this jibe with a Carleton record?

Hi Don--

This record appears to fit-- see what you think:

Carlton 10139 is a 17 foot CS (common sense, or middle) grade Carleton model canoe, completed from January 13 to April 18, 1914. It has red Western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, and maple decks, thwarts, and seat frames. It was fitted with a keel and painted green and shipped to Abercrombie and Fitch in NYC on April 23, 1914.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy
