If you post pictures of your canoe, we may be able to identify it. Old Town canoes generally have serial numbers that are 5-6 digits long, followed by a space and the length of the canoe (no dashes). There are some older OTs with 4 digit numbers, and the length of the canoe is either before or after the serial number (also with no dashes).
Old Town 4943 is a 15' CS (common sense, or middle) grade Charles River model canoe with ash decks, thwarts, and seat frames, CLOSED spruce gunwales, and no keel. It was shipped to Old Forge, NY, on July 25, 1906. (This doesn't seem like the record that goes with your canoe.)
There are canoes by other builders that have a deck similar to Old Town's and there are canoes by other builders with 4-digit serial numbers... as I said, pictures may help us figure out what you have.
The scan of Old Town 4943 is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.
This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at
http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See
