Regarding paddling these Charles River boats. Check out the 1927 movie of the young buck racers running these boats down the Charles that is posted on this site. Murat posted the video. They are paddling the canoes from the center, on one knee, Olympic style. Suddenly, the lack of a center thwart makes more sense than just allowing more room for your sweetheart!!
