1960 Arrowhead canoe repair question

Good Morning:
I acquired a 1960 Arrowhead fiberglass 18 footer. Wood and screws tie the gunnel to the fiberglass hull. Is cedar an acceptable choice of wood? Anything better? I'm on a budget.

My big concern is the wood rot in the transom. It's a flatback. The fiberglass is sound, but the transom wood is totally deteriorated. Will I need to cut out the interior fiberglass to remove the wood and reglass the transom? Or, is there a way to get out most of the wood and fill the transom with some sort of resin? I read about some sort of fiber inpregnated resin that might fit the bill.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Marty
