Hello, Has anyone out there use cedar for outwales? My boat came with spruce and I am ready to make some new ones. I was at Home Depot looking at their 16 ft stock of spruce and the best grade they have is #2 with quite a lot knots. The 16 ft cedar looked a little more clear and was thinking of giving it a try. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

In the home stretch now. Made and installed outwales. Made 4,used 3. The first one broke. Started with the turkey fryer but ended up using a hand held streamer with good results. Stained them then put down 3 coats of varnish. I'm going to laydown 1 or 2 more coats of primer,sand then start with the Kirby's semi-gloss I have.

Finally complete. With temps in the 90's it was hard to get the paint down.Took just over 10 months but I enjoyed it. Need to focus my attention on house stuff now before I start another. Would have posted a few more pics but kept getting error message.

All of that was awesome! I like the seats. My project was built just a few hundred canoes later. I have a portion of one of the wartime seats so I might do the same thing.

I would love to see a pic of that partial seat you have. I kinda winged it making mine. I looked up other pics but never really knew how accurate they were.

I don't remember ever seeing this with slats. I vaguely recall my dad replacing the side piece with screws and capped by dowels. I think three of the pieces are originals, and the rope is obviously not.

Hi Paul - Would you mind giving a brief description of how it was to work with the Chill Seal for filler. I'm considering using that on my next canoe.

I liked it. Since this is my first canoe restoration I never used anything else to compare. I used 2 gallons and applied using and plastic body filler spreader. I didn't put done as even as I thought so I had a lot of sanding (fairing) to do. Next time I would try rolling on for a more even coverage. I also put down 6 coats of high build up primer sanding between coats due to my uneven application of the filler. A lot of extra work I feel next time I will be able to avoid. I used Kirby's paint and it did not lay down or flow very good, even after thinning so I ended up wet sanding and wheeling it out like a car. It was a lot of work but is now smooth as glass. All that being said I will use the filler again but only time will show how durable it is.
