To all,
First I just wanted to say Thank you!

Attached is pictures from a 1941 Old Town 16ft serial 146636 16 and I'm looking for assistance with identifying the model of this canoe. One thing that I thought was strange was the seats in the canoe, they are not cane would these be Old Town optional seat type?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Swanny

Welcome to the WCHA!

Those are the typical WW2 era seats, as cane was in short supply.

Someone will be along with the actual build record, but I believe the 146xxx series are just a bit later than 1941... 1945-46-ish. I think...

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 146636 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between September and December, 1946. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on January 21sth, 1947 to Rochester, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The seats are typical for this period as Paul mentioned. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,

Benson
