I’m Located near Washington DC (Bethesda, MD)and my neighbor is in his 90s and downsizing. He has this 1939 Lakefield All Wood Canoe that he got in Connecticut decades ago. He had it restored by Mike Hanna of Alder Creek Boat Works a long time ago.
It’s been up in the air but under a tarp in his backyard since 2009. The hull seems very sound but the gunwale is rotted and needs replaced as well of some of the deck where it meets the bow and stern. It will need some work but I don’t think anything super extensive. It was stored upside down and from what I can tell some moisture got trapped on the backside of the deck and gunwale and sat. The rot seems localized only to that area.
His house is in the process of being sold and will convey with the house if it doesn’t find a home.
Are these reasonable repairs and what should I convey in a potential ad that all needs to be repaired? Also, what should expect to sell it for? I do not know anything about wood canoes and I’m trying to help him out and make sure it finds a good home where it will be restored. I posted on a Facebook group and half the people said these are given away as projects but I feel like that isn’t the case and was going to ballpark it at around $800.
The last photo is what it looked like in 2009 before it was neglected.
