1913 Old Town 16' D.E. Boat

Blue Viking

Wooden Canoe Maniac
Had a knock on my door a little while ago and the person showed me pics and build record for a 1913 double ended, 2 station rowing boat (Canoe) with tiller.... that he has in his barn....Built for his family and has been in the family the whole time....Serial number is 25857....
This elderly gentleman has no desire to restore it after conversation...Plus its too heavy for him...He is willing to let it go I believe...If anyone is interested in it, I can hook you up with him...He saw a new one several years back on the showroom floor at Old Town and I believe that if you contact Benson Gray as to the asking price he can tell you...so I DO know he will not give it away.
Regretably I can not afford it or I would not be posting this...The pictures he brought show it to be in remarkably good condtion....Also, there is a picture of this boat in the book that was written about the history of the Old Town Canoe Company.... So I am putting it out to anyone who may be interested . Thanks for reading

Hi Ted,

I'll attach the build record, which appears to fit the details re this canoe. The record for 25857 shows a 16 foot CS grade, double ended boat with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, thwarts, and seat frames, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was originally dark green, and was shipped to Madison, ME, on June 10, 1913.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

I've not researched this serial number before and have no other information about it as far as I know. There are several of these listed for sale at various locations including a few in terrible condition with exceptionally high asking prices. Caveat emptor,

Benson
