Curious about Wooden Canoes
My father has a 18", serial number 108457, I belive is an OTCA. Years ago he had a copy of the build record, but time and many moves has done away with it and I'd love to be able to replace it for him. Other then needing recanvassing, it's it beautiful shape.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards, Adam

Adam: The Old Town canoe with serial number 108457 is an 18 foot long, CS grade, OTCA model with open spruce gunwales and a keel. It was built between December 1930 and June 1931. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 9th, 1931 to Broncheille (??), New Jersey. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Yes, it's an Otca...

Hi Adam--

108457 was assigned to an 18 foot CS grade ("common sense", or not fancy) Otca with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, and birch decks, birch seats, and birch thwarts. It was fitted with a keel, painted dark green and sent to M.W. Browne at Glen Cove Cottage in [what appears to be] Branchville, New Jersey on July 9, 1931-- so, you're coming up on the canoe's 77th birthday.

A scan of the build record is attached below. Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details.

Please join WCHA or make a tax deductible contribution so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA, http://www.wcha.org/wcha_video.php to watch a 10 minute video about WCHA and our programs and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join. If you are already a WCHA member, THANK YOU!

Hope your dad enjoys seeing this information again.

Happy paddling,
Kathy
